UV vs. shock chlorination
A one-time well disinfection and a continuous ultraviolet lamp are different jobs. Neither replaces a lab or a health department.
Shock chlorination is a batch cleaning of a well and the plumbing. Ultraviolet (UV) treatment is a lamp on the house side that is supposed to inactivate microbes in water that is already clear. People search “UV vs. shock” as if they were two brands of the same product. They are not. One is a procedure. The other is a point-of-entry device. Both get sold at the wrong moment — usually the week after a coliform hit, when the useful call is the health department.
CDC’s well-testing guidance: private wells are not regulated like public systems; test every year for total coliform, nitrates, TDS, and pH; use a state-certified lab; if results show harmful germs or chemicals, consider another safe water source and contact the health or environmental department. EPA’s private-well pages say the same. This guide will not tell you a lamp made the water safe. It will tell you which class does which job.
What shock chlorination is
You introduce a chlorine solution into the well, circulate it through the plumbing, wait, then flush until the chlorine is gone, then retest. The goal is to knock down bacteria that got into the well or the pipes — after construction, a flood, a pump pull, or a bad cap.
It is not a filter. It does not remove nitrate. It does not remove iron. It may disturb iron bacteria slime (Minnesota Department of Health notes chlorine is cheap and does not always reach biofilm; you may need more than one treatment or mechanical cleaning).
Details of concentration, contact time, and how to keep chlorine out of a septic or a stream belong with your state bulletin and a licensed well contractor. This page will not give a recipe. Bad recipes crack seals, ruin pumps, and send a plume to the ditch.
After a shock, the water can look worse for a while: rust that was stuck comes loose. That is not a reason to skip the retest.
What UV is
A UV system (NSF/ANSI 55 when certified) puts water past a lamp. Class A systems are intended for microbiologically unsafe water under the standard’s conditions. Class B systems are for supplemental treatment of already treated water. Read the listing. “UV” on a carton is not a class.
UV does nothing to nitrate, arsenic, hardness, or iron. Dissolved iron, manganese, and turbidity shade microbes. A lamp after a rusty well is a night-light. That is why UV sits last in treatment order: after sediment, iron, and anything that makes the water cloudy.
UV needs electricity, a clean sleeve, a lamp replaced on a calendar, and a sensor if you paid for one. A bypass valve that stays open is a decoration.
When each class is on the table

If E. coli is present, do not shop. Use other water and call the health department.
UV will not shock a well
A lamp in the basement cannot disinfect the borehole, the drop pipe, or the pressure tank. People install UV, get a clean kitchen sample (sampled after the lamp), and think the well is fine. Sample the untreated tap when you want to know about the aquifer and the well. Sample after treatment when you want to know about the device.
Shock will not give you a continuous barrier. Groundwater can reintroduce bacteria. If the well is under the eaves in a cow yard, you have a siting problem.
Certification and contractors
Search UV models in the NSF DWTU database under NSF/ANSI 55. Check flow rate versus your peak gpm. A 5 gpm Class A reactor on a 12 gpm house is theater.
Shock work that involves pulling a pump belongs to a licensed well contractor. NGWA contractor lookup plus the state list. If someone offers to “shock it with a tablet you drop in every month” as a substitute for a sanitary well, get a second person.
Manufacturer catalogs (official URLs, application pending) sell UV as a checkbox on well packages. SpringWell, US Water Systems, Aquasana, Pentair. A package that puts UV first in the drawing is a drawing by marketing.
Iron, sulfur, and the lamp
If you need an iron or sulfur oxidizer, that system goes in before UV. Chlorine injection plus carbon plus UV is a real stack for some houses; it is also three things to maintain. Do not add UV to a failing iron filter to “make it safer.” Fix the filter or the well.
Bottom line
Shock is a cleaning event with a retest. UV is a last-stage lamp for clear water. Bacteria and nitrate results go to the health department. CDC and EPA already assigned that phone call. A shopping cart cannot take it for you.
