Minnesota Certified Well Water Labs
Direct answer
This is the minnesota certified-lab inventory for private-well owners. Use the official search first, then a lab that takes a residential sample. Bacteria or nitrate still goes to the health department.
| What to test | Why | EPA MCL / SMCL or guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Total coliform | CDC’s annual floor for a private well. A present result is a pathway warning, not a shopping trip. | Present/absent — any detected coliform is a positive until a clean retest CDC well-testing guidelines |
| Nitrate as N | Same yearly panel as coliform. A result at or above the public-system line goes to the health department. | 10 mg/L as N (EPA public-system MCL) EPA National Primary Drinking Water Regulations |
| pH | CDC annual floor. Low pH is a corrosion clue, not an iron-filter job. | 6.5–8.5 SMCL (aesthetic guideline) EPA secondary standards |
| Total dissolved solids | CDC annual floor with coliform, nitrate, and pH. | 500 mg/L SMCL (aesthetic guideline) EPA secondary standards |
A working inventory of MDH-accredited laboratories that accept private-well samples. Confirm current drinking-water accreditation in the live ELDO search before you mail a bottle.
This page is a directory, not a ranking and not medical advice. Minnesota Department of Health accredits laboratories through MNELAP. The July 2026 table “Accredited Labs in Minnesota Accepting Drinking Water Samples from Private Well Users” is a snapshot of labs that take homeowner bottles for coliform, nitrate, arsenic, lead, and/or manganese. Accreditation is by analyte and it lapses. Re-check ELDO before you pay. MDH’s Well Testing, Results, and Options page — and the March 11, 2024 press note on the same five contaminants — tells private-well owners to test coliform bacteria and nitrate every year, and arsenic, lead, and manganese at least once (manganese especially before a baby drinks the water). Those are MDH’s published cadence, not a diagnosis on this page. MDH’s published manganese guidance numbers on that tips page are above 100 µg/L for infants under one year and above 300 µg/L for everyone else. If coliform or nitrate fails, take the sheet to the health department. For rotten-egg odor, the hot-versus-cold split, and MDH’s carbon / oxidizing-media classes, use Hydrogen Sulfide in Minnesota Well Water. For the 0.3 mg/L aesthetic line, ferrous/ferric/organic forms, and iron-bacteria slime, use Iron in Minnesota Well Water. For the 10 mg/L as N public-system comparison, the ~3 mg/L human-influence follow-up, and MDA Township Testing context, use Nitrates in Minnesota Well Water. For the 100 / 300 µg/L comparison and treatment classes after the sheet, use the Manganese in Minnesota Well Water guide — not a filter brand. For the invisible-glass arsenic split, the 10 µg/L public-system comparison, and MDH’s “at least once” cadence, use Arsenic in Minnesota Well Water. For hardness as CaCO3, MDH’s 50 / 120 mg/L teaching lines, and why a softener waits on iron and manganese, use Hardness in Minnesota Well Water. MDH’s published five-contaminant cadence does not include PFAS. If you add a PFAS panel, confirm that analyte in ELDO — it is not a yearly Minnesota statute. For how EPA’s public-system PFAS numbers compare to a private-well sheet, use the PFAS in private well water guide. Well Diagnosis does not run a kit program and does not certify laboratories.

Official search first
Open MDH Search for Accredited Laboratories (ELDO; health.state.mn.us/labsearch also lands here). Choose Customized Searches. Set Program to Safe Drinking Water Program. Pick the analyte you need. At the bottom of the page, check “Accepts samples from private homeowners,” then Search. The list is labs currently accredited for that field that say they take a homeowner bottle. Then call about bottles, hold times, and whether a Friday bacteria sample can arrive inside the hold time. The July 2026 PDF map/table is a useful geographic snapshot, not a live certificate. A star on that table means the lab publishes a courier or drop-off network — contact the lab; this page does not invent those sites. An asterisk means the lab subcontracts that analyte to another accredited bench. Confirm current fields in ELDO or with MNELAP at 651-201-5324 before you mail a sample.

Labs that take private-well work
Listing here is not a certification. Phone the lab, ask for current drinking-water fields of accreditation, hold times, and whether they want a Friday bacteria sample. If the result is coliform or nitrate, take the sheet to your health department.

MDH / private-well contacts
These numbers are printed on the July 2026 labmap PDF and on MDH’s well-testing pages. They are the health-department path, not a shopping-cart kit. County environmental or public health offices often hand out bottles or run a local drop-off — start there when that path exists. Hours change; call before you drive. After the sheet comes back, use the Manganese in Minnesota Well Water guide for the 100 / 300 µg/L comparison, then the lab-report guide on this site.
